Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teenage years and she joined National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she concluded that the school was not right for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
